Education Incentive
Employees in Police Officer, Master Police Officer, and Police Supervisor classifications who hold a baccalaureate degree shall receive an educational salary supplement of $1,500 per fiscal year, and those who hold a post-baccalaureate degree receive an educational salary supplement of $3,000 per fiscal year. Employees in Senior Police Supervisor classifications who hold a post-baccalaureate degree shall receive an educational salary supplement of $3,000 per fiscal year. All degrees must be from accredited institutions and verified by the constituent institution’s central human resources office.
Special Event/Overtime Pay
ECU Officers have the opportunity to work a large variety of on-campus events. Officers are entitled to overtime compensation at the rate of time-and-one-half (1 and 1/2) of their regular straight time pay rate when they work in excess of eighty-six (86) hours in a two-week period.
Shift Differential
Officers who work night-shift receive a 10% shift differential pay. Officers who work patrol rotate to night-shift every other month.
Holiday Pay
The University observes approximately eleven (11) holidays per year and eligible employees are paid for the holiday closings. Employees who are required to work on designated holidays shall be given, in addition to regular salary, premium pay equal to one-half of their regular straight-time hourly rate for such hours as are worked on these days. Employees who are required to work on designated holidays shall also be given holiday compensatory time, not to exceed 8 hours.
Uniforms and Equipment
Uniforms and equipment for all police officer ranks are furnished by the Department.
Employees in LEO positions (0.5 FTE or greater) are eligible to receive tuition waivers for all eligible academic courses taken at UNC constituent institutions with appropriate supervisory approval. These employees are not subject to the limit of three tuition waivers per academic year.
Full-time employees, their spouses, and dependent children may borrow textbooks for classes.
Hours
Patrol Officers work 12-hour shifts, days and nights. Shifts are rotated once a month on the Monday of the first full week.
Employees in LEO positions (hired after January 1, 2025) shall accrue 26 days of annual leave each calendar year. Sick Leave is earned at a rate of eight (8) hours per month. Sick Leave will accrue if not used and can be used to advance your retirement date.
The State Health Plan offers eligible employees two Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plan options, the 70/30 and 80/20. These plans offer coverage for both in-network and out-of-network providers. Spouse and dependent coverage can be obtained for an additional premium.

Banking Programs
University employees are eligible to join the NC State Employees Credit Union and can receive special banking perks from Wachovia and BB&T.
All permanent, probationary, and time-limited employees regularly scheduled to work at least 30 hours or more per week are required to contribute 6% of their earnings to a mandatory retirement plan of their choice. Upon initial eligibility, all employees are given up to 30 calendar days to make their mandatory retirement election. Eligible employees are granted the option upon eligibility to choose between the Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP).
Law Enforcement Officers (LEO) Retirement Plans
Sworn LEO are automatically enrolled in the NC 401(k) Plan. ECU pays 5% of the sworn LEO salary to the NC 401(k) plan and the sworn LEO may elect to make additional contributions.
