Application Process & Requirements


For Consideration as a Police Officer an Applicant must:

  • Be a United States citizen
  • Be at least twenty (20) years of age
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Be a high school graduate or possess or GED Certificate which meets state standards
  • Have no felony convictions or disqualifying misdemeanor convictions

Required Documents for Background Investigations:

  • Proof of Valid Driver’s License (must possess a valid NC driver’s license prior to hiring)
  • Birth Certificate (original or certified copy)
  • Social Security Card
  • High School Diploma or GED Certificate
  • Sealed College Transcripts
  • Copy of Credit Report
  • Department of Defense Form 214 (Military Discharge) stating “character of service”, if applicable

POLICE OFFICER applicants MUST meet the Minimum Standards for Certification (12 NCAC 09B .0101 and 12 NCAC 09B .0111) as a law enforcement officer set by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.

 

Out-of-State Police Officer Applicants MUST:

  • have a minimum of two (2) years of full-time, sworn law enforcement experience;
  • have successfully completed a basic law enforcement training (BLET) course by the state from which you are transferring;
  • NOT have a break in service exceeding one (1) year;
  • and submit the following documentation:
    • a letter from your previous law enforcement agency detailing your dates of FULL-TIME, sworn service;
    • a copy of your basic law enforcement training (BLET) course certificate of successful completion;
    • a topical breakdown/syllabus of the courses that you completed in your BLET course.

All positions with the ECU Police Department are located online at East Carolina University Portal | Home (peopleadmin.com). Police Officer positions are identified as Police Officers, and Telecommunicator positions are identified as Public Safety Telecommunicators.
